Project 4 : Prototyping & Evaluation

1.0 Introduction

myEnergy application was implemented with features to assist the users in monitoring their electricity consumption and monthly bills. The app features functionalities to assist users in fulfilling their needs which are viewing bill history, paying electricity bills and providing feedback. The view bill history allows the users to view their past monthly bills through the myEnergy app simply by selecting the month of the bills they want to view.

Moving on, the app also provides a feature allowing users to pay their monthly electricity bills through the app by clicking on the "Pay" button and proceeding with the payment through their preferred payment methods.

myEnergy app also provides a feature to allow the users to provide feedback on their current user experience when using the application. With this, the user could sound their satisfaction or dissatisfaction directly to the developers.

The user interface and user experience aspect of the myEnergy app are scrutinised to make sure that it is user-friendly towards all ranges of the user's expertise. With it, the users would not have problems navigating around the app as the symbols and interactions in the app follow the guidance in the Human-Computer Interaction studies.

Therefore, the myEnergy app was primarily built to assist users in monitoring their electricity consumption and ease their burden by providing a way to allow them to pay their bills through the app while at the same time, providing a user-friendly interface and engaging interaction to further enhance the users' experience when navigating the application.

3.0 Briefing notes

Greetings and Good Morning/ Afternoon/ Evening to respected Sir/Madam,

First and foremost, we from Team Xer0x would like to thank you for participating in our Usability Testing session. Allow me to introduce myself. I am … , and I will be leading this session as the facilitator. Thus, users will utilise our app which we have named myEnergy. We can complete a lot of tasks with it by just clicking a few buttons.

Then, we want you to use the prototype we built on the Figma app to complete three tasks today. Please share your thoughts and views about our interface and system with us during testing. Say “Stop” to let us know if you are having trouble with the task at hand or that you are not able to finish it. Then, we will go forward to the next task.

Sir/Madam, before we start, may I have your verbal consent first? If you understand everything I mentioned just now, reply “Yes”. If no, reply to us with “No”.

5.0 Observations

Based on the feedback given by the users, testing the myEnergy application indicates that this application is excellent whether in characteristics of design, the layout of this user interface or the colour which make the user easy to use and understand. However, there was still room for improvement such as we can add the linguistic features to improve the user interface design. There is a need for more language options since they enable the user to select the language of their choice, making it handy and easy for users to grasp.

5.1 User 1 : Tengku Aiman

Question 1 : What is easy in this app?

The symbol actually represents what it does which leads to easy navigation.

Question 2 : What do you find difficult?

Honestly, this app is very beginner friendly and nothing complicated in it and all the symbols used are common.

Question 3 : Do you find the animation interesting?

I don't find the animation interesting because there are apps I used before that have similar animation and in fact it is commonly found in similar apps.

Question 4 : How do you find the app’s look especially on the colour scheme?

The colour scheme is appealing and simple which gives some sort of futuristic style and the colour is consistent in every page of the app.

5.2 User 2 : Muhammad Affif Farhan

Question 1 : What is your first impression of our app prototype?

The colour scheme is quite appealing and the User Interface is easy to navigate around.

Question 2 : What did you find easy regarding our application?

The outstanding balance can be viewed in the homepage giving easy access to me without doing extra interactions or work just to view it making things easier.

Question 3 : Did you find our user interface to be user-friendly?

Yes, I find it very friendly to the users since the interface is neat and buttons are labelled clearly and there are fewer interactions to perform certain tasks.

5.3 User 3 : Muhammad Amirul Azfar

Question 1 : What is your first impression of our prototype?

The interface is very good, the colour scheme is comfortable and consistent.

Question 2 : Is our interface prototype easy to use?

The icon is very easy to understand and when I see the button I know what to do next.

Question 3 : Is the animation interesting?

Very interesting and colourful.

6.0 Findings

After users have tested our myEnergy application, which are from students from UTM and we got some feedback from them. There are some improvements that can be added to the application interface. Firstly, users reported to us the issue with the language selections and suggested that we expand the app’s language support. Being a diverse country, Malaysians have been educated since kindergarten and speak at least two languages. We have decided to add Malay, Chinese and Tamil as two more languages to the application. When an app is first installed on a user’s device, they will be prompted to select a default language. The application’s settings page is where users may adjust the language if  they want so.

Additionally, our lecturer Dr Farhan also suggests that our application combines with the water and phone bill so it will be easier for the users. Users can easily control and monitor their utilities with myEnergy acting as a central hub for telephone and water services. This facilitates a more seamless and connected lifestyle. This integrated solution highlights a dedication to giving people a single and intuitive interface for their basic needs as well as to reflecting a commitment to technical synergy.

The application's common actions and interfaces make it easier for users to navigate and minimise the need to pick up new interactions for various tasks. Shortcuts Frequent users who want information about their electricity usage are catered to by the features that are included, such as statistical graphs and energy consumption tracking. Experts can use these features as shortcuts to quickly access important data for making decisions. Informative Feedback Informative feedback is given by notifying users of upcoming bills, due dates for payments, and modifications to their billing informa...

Team Xer0x Greetings to everyone who is reading our personal blog ! We would like to thankyou for having time to read and scroll down through our blog. Our team name which is 'Xer0x' as you may know from the Xerox Machine that we learn during our degree semester 1. It implies a commitment to efficiency and precision. The deliberate use of the numeral "0" in place of the letter "o" adds a tech-savvy and modern touch to the name, aligning it with the digital age. Much like a Xerox machine reproduces documents with accuracy and speed, Team Xer0x may be perceived as a group that excels in replicating success, delivering consistent and high-quality outcomes. The name not only pays homage to a well-known technology brand but also suggests a team that is proficient in leveraging technology for optimal results.

Project Proposal

Problem Definition       Traditional electricity meters is a mechanical device that is used to measure the amount of electricity that flows through a household or property. The electric provider company will visit the household periodically, record the electricity readings and generate bills for the consumers to pay. This is in fact less efficient for both companies and the household consumers. Other than that, the fact that it is a mechanical device, There are several problems old electricity meters might face such as:       1. Inaccuracy readings (Usability Goal)           There are parts such as the impeller, gear or even the shell that will eventually            degrade or wear out due to aging or continuous operations which will directly            lead to inaccuracy readings and cause the bill to be either overcharged or             ...
